Synopsis

Dave Spritz is about to take his best shot . . . at life

A Chicago weather man, separated from his wife and children, debates whether professional and personal success are mutually exclusive.

Nicolas Cage internal monologue movies are in fact a sub-genre ... one that I love dearly.

"David, I've practiced and I've gotten good. Like you and the weather business ... But I don't predict it. Nobody does, 'cause i-it's just wind. It's wind. It blows all over the place! What the f*ck!"

It is scary just how relatable I find this story about a TV weatherman undergoing an existential/family/mid-life crisis. Director Gore Verbinski's The Weather Man is a somber yet amusing look at a guy that is good at what he does but lets his marriage fall apart, and struggles with living in what he sees as the shadow of his father's success. He is the kinda guy who thinks…

This is one odd crossroads for Nic Cage. It was really the last time we got "prestige" Cage. The last time he was granted the reputation as a "great actor" by the mainstream. He was coming off his last Oscar nomination (and my personal favorite performance) just three years earlier in Adaptation. Then Matchstick Men was lush with prestige in typical Ridley Scott fashion. And then the following year, National Treasure was his breakthrough "family film" hit.

By 2005, Cage was now 40 years old with ten years of commercial and critical success to speak for him. Him winning his Oscar in 1996 all the way through The Weather Man in 2005 can be summarized as the "Cage Golden Age."…

I love Nicolas Cage. Tartar sauce. I grew up just outside of Chicago. Tartar sauce. I like films where despair and dark comedy are often confused for one another. I wish I had two dicks. The Weather Man was the film for me all this time and I had no idea.

A Nic Cage a Month Keeps You Drunk 3.0

This one took me by surprise. I was expecting a ho-hum family drama, and it's not that at all. We listen as a man internally reflects on pieces of his life. I really liked the narration. It’s well written and Nic Cage has a great voice, soothing but emphatic.

“If you want your father to think you’re not a silly f*ck, don’t slap a guy across the face with a glove. Because if you do that, that’s what he will think, unless you’re a nobleman or something in the 19th century, which I’m not.”

Dave Spritz. It’s not a great life he leads. Apart from his job, that is. He’s a…

Vainglorious Tai Chi weather moves. I’m refreshed. I’m refreshing.Life is a confusing maze of misery with a few sun-spackled rays of light bursting through the tall trees. Cage and Caine tackle the impossible, dreadful parental. Camel toes, Canadian trade winds and Wendy’s frostys are explored. Don’t forget the tartar sauce because nothing that has meaning is easy. Bob Seger holds the meaning of life in his hairy, sweaty hands. I’m fast food.

My 2nd visit to the Hensarling! Podcast. After one of the the darkest months of my life, we had a much needed laugh. I’m forever grateful. I’m also bumping The Weather Man up to a full five bags o’ corn. We also talk about Kevin Costner even though I still don’t care for Bull Durham.

the best part of watching this was discovering that there’s a track in the score called “Visions of SpongeBob”. Thank you Hans Zimmer.

Film #38 of The December Project

The Weather Man is one of the best character studies I've ever seen and probably my favorite performance from Nicolas Cage. The description makes it seem like it's going to be the most boring movie ever:

"A Chicago weather man, separated from his wife and children, debates whether professional and personal success are mutuallyexclusive."

Sure, it's accurate, but the film itself holds your attention more than that one sentence description does.

There is barely any plot, but it's okay, because the many subplots serve to move the film along and make you feel like lots of things are happening when they are not. That's usually a weakness and shows that the film isn't…

    "his a$$hole face."

    Let's Get Cage-d

The Weather Man isn't about the 'Spritz Nipper' - it's about the variance.

    & What's that, you ask?

Well, the variance depends on the subject, really. Are we talking about Wendy's frostys, camel toes, silver spoons, archery, zoosadism, unenthusiastic blowj*bs, store discounts, Big Gulps, living funerals, pedo program counselors, trust falls, alimony highlife, sleeved hot apple pie, or overpaid-wyt-American-male privilege?

    No.
    No, we aren't.
Because that stuff is meaningless. That stuff is like wind, & wind just blows all over the place.

We're talking about tartar sauce, Dave.

The Cage-athon: Delving Into Nicolas Cage's Filmography

People don't seem to like The Weather Man very much on average, but I was impressed by the simplistic, yet oddly satisfying approach director Gore Verbinski chose for this intricate character study. Cage delivers one of the finest performances of his career, and listening to Michael Caine's wise words will never not be an absolute pleasure. An underrated, and for sure overlooked gem, in my opinion.

Whereas in Nicolas Cage's previous film, I criticized that Lord of War utilized narration as a means of telling the story rather than showing it, The Weather Man applies narration to guide us through the main character's thoughts, whose internal journey is the focal point of the…

Happy Tuesday, kids! Swart is an absolute gem of a human being & one of my favorite people ever back for round 2 of WTL. At one point discussing Nic Cage & The Weather Man, I laugh so hard there were literal tears in my eyes, so. Please tune in for our shenanigans and hear him make a pretty convincing case for this bonkers film.
