Why is my table lamp not working? ›

Check the Bulb First

Make sure you remove the table lamp from any source of power. Once you've done that, simply unscrew it and insert a brand new light bulb of the same type. If the new bulb lights up when you reconnect the power, then problem solved!

The Rule of Thirds: Typically, your lamp (shade included) should sit at about one-third the height of your table, and its width shouldn't exceed one-third of the table's width.

As a general rule of thumb, the bottom of the lampshade should be at eye level when you are seated. This will ensure that the light is directed downward and provides optimal illumination for reading or other tasks.

A good rule of thumb for a living room setting is that you will want your lamp shade to sit within eye level, or about 24 - 34 inches tall. That way you'll be able to read your favorite book or work with ease under enough light when seated.

If one lamp tube is not on, but the other lamps are on, check whether the filament is burned out. If it breaks, replace the lamp. If the filament does not burn out, you should check whether the switch and the lamp cap are in poor contact, and whether there is any fault such as disconnection.

Lamp Height - A good rule of thumb is to find a table lamp that is approximately 30" tall from the bottom of the base to the top of the shade/finial. Without getting too mathematical, the top of the lamp should be between 58" and 64" from the ground.

Think of lighting as the jewelry of the living room — not as a pair of earrings that have to match but as bangles that go together. This means that living room lamps don't have to match – but they do have to create a cohesive look and feel.

Your lamp should be a maximum of 1.5 times the height of the table. The shade should be twice as wide as the diameter of the base of the lamp. The lampshade should be no wider than the table it sits on. Your lamp should “go” with the style of the room.

End tables are typically smaller than side tables (approx. 12" - 18" diameter/square) and can often fit into tight spaces. Here are a few examples of end tables that pack a lot of style and would work in many modern contemporary or transitional spaces.

There are even smaller versions called buffet or console table lamps, which are under 30 inches in height and generally found on end tables or nightstands.

How do I know what size lamp to buy? ›

First, measure the width and height of the table where you're going to put the lamp. Look for lamps that are no more than 1.5 times as high as the table. Also, look at the diameter of the lamp shade. It shouldn't be any wider than the tabletop.

You usually want to choose a table or surface first and then determine the height of the lamp. My go-to range is about 24-28” depending on the placement. If you'll be sitting next to the lamp, the bottom of the shade should be at about eye level.

Here's the rule: your end table should be within two inches of your sofa's arm height. If your couch's arm stands at just 18 inches, then, you'll want a shorter end table (between 16-20 inches). Accordingly, taller couches require taller end tables.

The bottom of the lampshade should be about level with your eyes while sitting in bed for the best reading light level. Aim to have your bedside lamps the same height as your headboard or a couple of inches in either direction.

Check the lightbulb to see if it is loose in the socket, or has burned out. Tighten the bulb or replace it, as needed. Check the socket tab in the center of the socket. If it's flattened, you may have to pull up on it in order for it to make contact with the bulb.

Check your fuse or circuit breaker in the fuse box, if you were particularly “lucky”, the broken bulb might have blown the fuse, too. Another common trouble is at the switch, if the screws were not tightened enough when the light switched were installed, they might spark a little and in time they oxydize.

The most common reason LED lights stop working is a faulty power source. You should check to make sure your lights are plugged in and the power source is working normally (you can check this by plugging something else into the outlet and seeing if it switches on), or purchase a new LED power supply.

Floor or table lamps can last for years in good working order. But eventually, they may need to be rewired. Rewiring a lamp is a simple project that can revitalize your lamp and make it new again—and far safer—for very little money or effort.
