𝗜𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻, 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗙𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗭Claire's love for science began in year 11, where she found a commonality between the study of chemistry and her interest in miniaturism. As a miniature enthusiast, discovering a world of tiny, unseen things that shape everything around us was like lightening striking twice in the same place!Claire was instantly captivated and fascinated by this miniature world, so much so she completed a degree in medicinal chemistry. With a desire to design new drugs, she had a ‘naïve’ vision to create molecular ‘knife and fork’ structures to combat diseases.Deciding on a different path, Claire transitioned from chemistry to biology. Her inspiration for change came when she compared the fields of studies. Chemistry is people designing chemicals to do life-changing things, whereas biology is nature achieving this on a micro scale which was ‘even more amazing’.Claire is now a regulatory scientist in our Biotechnology, Toxicology and Nutrition Science team. In this role, she gets to ‘nerd out’ on data which she assesses to ensure the safety of genetically modified foods.Reflecting on her achievements, Claire spoke fondly of her time in academia working as a lecturer. ‘It's always great to see students exploring and developing their own ideas and passions in science, and I've had the chance to teach some amazing, passionate students.’ Claire feels proud to have offered inspiration to many cohorts of science university students, including some who overcame hardships to success in their chosen fields. With a 6-year-old daughter who loves learning about subatomic particles, Claire is definitely an advocate for women and girls in science. Claire’s resounding advice is to ‘go for it’. What she is trying to instil into her daughter and other young women is that ‘sometimes it can seem like everything has already been worked out, but that’s not the case – there is so much more to learn and so many things we still do not know’. Claire wants aspiring scientists to follow what they are genuinely interested in and to not feel like they are tied to a path. ‘You can always change and pivot into something else. Sometimes, the best ideas and the most meaningful connections come from a simple coffee break with a partner and friend. ☕️ Today, we enjoyed a delightful coffee made by a skilled barista, and it reminded me of the importance of balancing work with quality time spent with those who matter most.Watching the process of the coffee dissolving with the ice to cool down while preserving its rich flavor was fascinating. It struck me how much this is like the meticulous work of medical drug research and development. Each step, from selecting the finest beans to achieving the perfect brew, mirrors the careful experimentation and understanding of chemical reactions in the lab.
